About
Washington, D.C. has a rich jazz history. It is the birthplace of Duke Ellington, but many other prominent musicians have called D.C. their home. Billy Taylor and Charlie Rouse grew up in the District before moving on, and numerous others had notable careers while maintaining their ties to D.C. This session will touch upon the Duke and examine the music of Washingtonians Shirley Horn, Buck Hill, Andrew White, Keter Betts, and Rick Henderson. We’ll view excerpts from two documentaries: "Oxygen for the Ears: Living Jazz" and "Seventh and T"; reminisce about Bohemian Caverns, the One Step Down, Blues Alley, Twins, and Harold’s Rogue and Jar, among others; and talk about where to hear live jazz music in the District today...
